Bauhaus ceramics, with their rationalized forms and ethical claims, exemplify the tension of masking social alienation by aestheticizing necessity rather than transforming the conditions of production. Hedwig Bollhagen’s pottery, with its craft residues and resistance to total standardization, can be read as a material instance of Adorno’s defense of the non-identical—yet one that remains fully commodified. As Adorno writes in Minima Moralia, “The house is past. The house no longer shelters the life within it.”
